What is the Medical Reserve Corps?

The Medical Reserve Corps (MRC) is a national program based on an initiative that began in 2002 by then President Bush immediately following September 11, 2001. That initiative called on all Americans to make a lifetime commitment of at least 4,000 hours, equivalent to two years of their lives, to serve their communities, the nation and the world, with a local, community-based emphasis. The MRC is intended to augment local community and state-level health and medical services utilizing pre-identified, trained and credentialed healthcare professionals and medical support staff to respond to a natural or man-made disaster as well as public health emergency.

The mission of the Sumter County Medical Reserve Corps
To recruit, train and retain healthcare professionals and medical support staff volunteers who will be able to contribute their skills and expertise in response to natural or man-made disaster or public health emergency.

What will I be expected to do as a member of the Sumter County Medical Reserve Corps?
You could find yourself working alongside other public health and emergency services professionals in various venues such as special needs shelters, mass vaccination or dispensing clinics, investigate disease outbreaks, alternate care sites, deliver community educational programs, to name a few. You will be deployed by the Florida Department of Health in Sumter County (FDOH-Sumter County).

How will my volunteering for the Sumter County Medical Reserve Corps benefit the County?
Major local emergencies can overwhelm the capability of first responders, especially during the first 12-72 hours. Your volunteer expertise will go to supporting, enhancing and improving the Health Department and County's ability to effectively respond to disasters and public health emergencies that affect your family and neighbors.
