Septic Systems

Permits for onsite sewage treatment and disposal systems are issued by Environmental Health. Establishments or residential development with domestic sewage flows of less than 10,001 gallons per day and commercial sewage waste less than 5,001 gallons per day are regulated by the Department of Health.  Industrial waste and flows higher than above are regulated by the Department of Environmental Protection. Properly sited, constructed and maintained systems ensure systems do not transmit disease or adversely affect our surface water bodies, rivers, ground water or other aspects of the environment.

The codes and standards for Onsite Sewage Treatment and Disposal Systems are
found in 64E-6.

For additional information go to Bureau of Environmental Health.
