Tuberculosis (TB)

Florida Department of Health in Sumter County

The Tuberculosis program provides a wide range of services to residents of Sumter County.

TB is a disease that is spread from person to person through the air. The germs are put into the air when a person with TB of the lung coughs, sneezes, laughs or sings. While TB is contagious, someone must be in close prolonged contact over an extended period of time to become infected. TB usually affects the lungs, but can also affect other parts of the body, such as the brain, the kidneys, and bone.

The purpose of the TB Control Program at the Sumter County Health Department is to:

  • Identify and treat to cure all active cases of TB.
  • Identify and test (also treat if indicated) all individuals exposed to an active TB case.
  • Conduct TB case management and contact tracing if indicated.
  • Provide education on TB disease.

If you have any questions, please call the Sumter County Health Department 352-569-3102.
